The Answer is – Nope – All Wrong!
In Fact, it takes Danny Sullivan to clarify this one for us.
I actually got curious about this today, so I decided to look it up online and came across a forum discussion thread in Danny Sullivan’s Search Engine Watch where he talks about this.

Who invented the words search engine optimization SEO?
Search Engine Watch inside of keywords, not the site itself in 1997. But this seems to indicate it was earlier, since using SEO for SEO would mean the topic was around for a little while…so other research seems to point to early or mid 1996.
No surprise on the years there…the rise of the Internet years and the pre-dotcom-bubble years.
