Word Pictures As a Headline Strategy

There’s one thing I have found to be powerfully true about social media sites like:

  • Digg
  • Reddit
  • Sphinn
  • etc

And that is:

Word pictures work best for social media – in other words, longer titles and headlines seem to work best.

Why is that?

Haven’t you ever gone to Reddit or Digg and just browsed through all of their top rated headlines?  Notice how for many of these headlines, they seem a bit longer, more descriptive and more audacious.

These are the headlines that get spun, dugg, whatever.  They do because their headline attracts the read, and then they digg it.

How many % of them don’t even get read beyond the headline?  Probably half I think.  Maybe less, but my point is – do the articles really get read or are people just giving votes for the best worded headlines?  One has to wonder.

But anyhow, if you want to optimize headlines for social medial like Reddit or Digg, use word pictures and highly descriptive, longer-than-usual headlines.

I hope this basic social media optimization strategy for you blog was helpful.  Comment, and subscribe so you don’t miss comments and more posts!
