Be careful about selecting your Niche, and think SEO always

There are two sides to this, either too niche or not niche enough. You must also pick a concept that has enough search engine traffic and still meets good niche criteria, targeted yet not so specific that the amount of search traffic is poor.

Again, think SEO

SEO suffers if your site is not specific or “niche” enough. You won’t come up on searches because there are either too many sites or not enough searches for the search term keywords. I learned the hard way. I made both mistakes.

My mistake #1…I forgot SEO and went too broad

The too generic topic I chose was “ideas”. But I never specified “about what”. It would’ve been better using “ideas about throwing a birthday party” or “ideas about more efficient engines”.

But just “ideas” was too broad, non-specific and the keyword “idea” just didn’t stand by itself even though my keyword research indicated it might.

My mistake was I just wanted to write about so many things that interest me. I realized that that this was just not possible and I had to choose. More on how to choose in an upcoming article.

My mistake #2…I forgot SEO and went too broad AGAIN!

The too broad topic area I chose was “Management”. Considering that the field of management is first too broad and second so saturated, that wasn’t a good idea to try to break into and expect results. Management could be everything from property, risk, IT, project, pain, anger and other “management” topics.

Generalities and generalist sites are terrible for SEO because they are not what searchers are looking for. People want specifics, as I stated in my last post. Generalists are not looking for anything. Generalist sites are not known for anything and won;t be found for anything. Get it?

Trying to narrow things based on keywords was difficult for me, and search terms just using “management” were pointless because most people wanted a specific kind of management, not just “management”.

How to narrow down your niche the right way

What could I have done? Simple. I could’ve picked something like “IT management”, which is a little better at least though still quite broad. IT Security management is even better, and perhaps the ideal.

IT Router Security management or Cisco IT Router Security management is probably the limit, bit also probably the most ideal. The threshold of balance between too broad and too narrow is worth the research. Take the time to find it.

You have to really ask yourself, “what specific knowledge or talents do I have in what area?” List as many specifics and then you’ll find your talent and your niche.

My Site How to Make Money Blogging

Take a look at my site How to Make Money Blogging.  I didn’t pick “how to build a web page”, of which making money is only a sub topic. I picked making money blogging as THE NICHE topic because it has many sub-topics within it.

It’s just right, though a very saturated topic to be sure. I know that. That’s why I picked “How to Make Money Blogging” because the combo of these terms gets enough traffic and narrows it down a bit (is more niche) and my hope is that it appeals to more specific needs.

Learn from my mistakes…

My site How to Make Money Blogging is meant to appeal to a wide audience who write and blog about practically any topic and it’s based on my personal experience, hobby and having fun. What a combination!

Hopefully this gives you some insight for what you must think about and do for your site or concept and your niche decision strategy. Going too broad is difficult and usually not successful.

I refused to believe it, and learned the hard way. Going too narrow doesn’t work, and may not last once your niche dies out. Don’t you make the same mistakes I did!
