Selecting The Right Domain Name The First Time Pt 2
I actually erred in the previous article “Selecting The Right Domain Name The First Time Pt 1
How? Because I said the most ideal domain name would have been “www.saying.com” but after thinking about it, I conclude that’s not true.
The most ideal domain name would have been:
www.quotes.com (not my site)
Why? Because “sayings” are “quotes” and when people are looking for quotes, they use “quotes” more than they use “sayings”
But – why didn’t I optimize this or many of my other blogs following my own advice? I have a very good explanation and you need to know why because this could also happen to you…settling for a second best domain.
Why You Might Not Land That Perfect Domain Name
1. Sayings may not be over-saturated yet compared with quotes based on your keyword research and a comparison of demand versus the supply or amount of sites trying to push this info.
It’s not wise to try to enter into a market where the supply is higher than the demand. Imagine if there were a million different types of hamburger fast food restaurants versus only three.
A new one just wouldn’t stand a chance. In today’s world, a new one even with 3 already optimized, ideal, and cheap ones it would be hard. There are VERY VALUABLE business lessons to be learned form this for the online world.
In the end only a few will dominate and remain the ones clearly on top. Think Starbucks and the coffee business. Same thing. Banks. Search Engines. Etc.
2. The most idea domain name(s) may not be available and so you have to find THE BEST ONE THAT IS!
3. Then you have to decide on the traffic potential for that domain name will be enough to make the effort worth it. This is a BIG DECISION.
Get your domain wrong the first time and you mess your entire business effort up and set yourself back again. I fear MANY people make this mistake and the domain hosts are making a lot of money off of this trial and error.
I also feel many people are giving up on a web based business for this reason. They just don’t have success finding a viable business anymore in a seemingly over-saturated web.
How I failed Too – So You Don’t Have To!
I have failed, and have bought and tried to sell a thousand dollars worth of domain names unsuccessfully and have tried to build tens of businesses unsuccessfully because I didn’t follow the best practices basics. This was partly through stubbornness and mostly through ignorance.
I either ignored good advice or I dodnlt know something and didn’t take the tome to properly learn, pay careful attention, free myself of distraction and focus on only ONE THING.
I was a web and blogging Rookie and made all the classic mistakes. You don’t have to…and if you already have you don’t have to anymore!
So get that domain name right the first time, and get the best one you possibly can…and don’t forget to follow KISS – keep it short and simple!
