Which Domain Type or Name Should I Register?

People trying to register a domain name often wonder which ending of the domain they should go with based on what they want their site named AND WHAT’s AVAILABLE STILL (the key).

So what happens is, all sorts of compromises go on, where people register their name that they want, with a different ending.

Other domain endings are not all that

Here are 7 domain name types to avoid, for now at least.  This could change.  But my own experience has found this to be true:

  • .info
  • .biz
  • .us
  • .mobi
  • .ws
  • .tv
  • .cc

I had a .us site and a .cc site and for the .us site, I followed the same regularities and controls with as my .com and .net sites and guess what I found out?  It didn’t matter.

The search engines did not really like my .us site.  But my less interesting and less content and less quality site that was .net and .com ranked better?

Coincidence?  No.  The search engines are set up that way.  I proved it myself, plus tons of others have confirmed this is so and everybody knows it.

The top 3 to use in order of my preference:

  • .com
  • .org
  • .net

Also, a .us site doesn’t allow for private registration.  What’s up with that?  Think about it…in the US we promote freedom and privacy (not anymore?) yet our very own domain is not private and forbids it.  Things that make you go hmm…

Anyhow if you have the choice and have a single keyword domain name as a .com that as I have said before is your best bet.  I know because one of my .com domain names has more success than one with a .us.

Also, my .org fared just as good as a .com domain name.  Finally, my .net domain name fared almost as good as a .com and .org domain name.

So in conclusion, here is the preferred order in my opinion:

  • #1 – .com
  • #2 – .org
  • #3 – .net
