There are probably a lot of links out there for finding free WordPress themes you can easily download, unzip and use for your money-making blog.

I would ask that this be a web 2.0 collaboration to come up with a list of lists of lists so as many free WordPress themes can be provided to as many people as possible.

That said, if you know of any other links to add to this list, please share and I will incorporate them into this list.

I want to make this into the best and longest, most comprehensive list of free WP themes ever!

Are You Using Too Many WordPress Plugins?

When I first started out, I was.  I must have had between 70-100 active plugins.  Not anymore.  I found out the hard way that:

• Some plugins mess up your blog

• Some plugins make your host’s server crash or bog it down, causing them to shut down your site

• Some plugins may be stealing PageRank

• Some plugins…who knows what they are doing for someone else, unbeknownst to you

• Some plugins seem to bring more spam

• Some plugins sound great but are not that good

• Some plugins are outdated

• Some plugins are no longer updated or supported

• Some plugins slow down how fast your page loads – in fact too many plugins do this

• Finally, some plugins conflict with other plugins and cause errors and SEO issues where your site does not index properly, display properly, nor post on schedule

Stop the plugin madness!  Also, be careful, you don;t know what the code is doing or how clean it is!  How secure is it?  Does it create a vulnerability?

How Many WordPress Plugins Should You Use?

Stick to no more than 50 active plugins at the absolute max and use the web of trust to find out how trustworthy a plugin is…don’t be on the bleeding edge of technology unless you’re willing to lose your whole site to test a plugin!

Matt Cutts recently wrote a post giving four good tips to protect a WordPress blog. Try these tips if you own a WordPress blog.

• Secure your /wp-admin/ directory…

• Make an empty wp-content/plugins/index.html file – it helps prevent people from finding out which plugins you use…

• Subscribe to the WordPress Development blog…

• Hide your WordPress version…your blog is prone to hackers until you upgrade to the latest version.”

• Keep your WordPress version up to date ALWAYS

• Keep your WordPress plugins up to date ALWAYS

• Get themes, plugins and code only from trusted sites

• Keep backups in case data is lost, corrupted or hacked so restoral is easy

Because:

• It will make you more popular and send you lost of traffic

• Your theme could have backlinks that most do not end up no-following, with anchor text, for your money-making blog
