Be an Aggregator, Announcer, Highlighter, Critic, Compiler, Informationist, How-to, Organizer, Searcher, Bug Fixer, Solution Needs Provider, Trendwatcher, Analyst, Forum or Social Host, Product Reviewer, Commentator, Lister, Unconventionalist, etc. etc.
New ideas are forming constantly in the web. Don’t be limited to what’s listed here alone, though I have tried to provide a comprehensive list based on my years of observing the blogosphere.
This is exactly along the lines of what I wrote about in my article about waveriding. Think about the opportunities and possibilities for already existing sites you like, and want to get into:
The Aggregator
Site example: CEO Express
This person aggregates the top resources for a particular niche or interest area and is a list of list person or one-stop-shop.
The Announcer
Site example: Mashable
Announces new blogs, or new posts within blogs. Recommend blogs or who to put in a blogroll. Announces new social media and what it does or how it’s different and your personal experiences and recommendations.
Builds trust with people and becomes someone they rely on for knowledge and advice or help. Creates that needs dependency and you will be forever liked. Within that, always provide a small but obvious opportunity to give something back.
The Highlighter
Site example: TechCrunch
This person highlights existing things such as products, and their features and benefits in order to inform.
The Critic
Site Example: PoliticalCritic
Responds to, complains, in a way where others agree with, and then starts to get liked and trusted. Feels your pain and helps you through it. A friend in need.
The Compiler
Site example: Drudge.com
Compiles massive amounts of information in a one-stop-shop. Not just link aggregation like the aggregator, but instead information, text – compiling.
The Informationist
Site example: About.com
This person moves beyond compiling and simple listing to actually methodical information abc-123 development from the 101 to the 501 (basics to advanced.)
The How-to-er
Site example: wikihow or ehow or tubetorial.com
Provide a written, audio or video tutorial (or all 3) or point to where there are some great ones (see aggregator.) Gives a simple, quick, easy to understand and follow how-to.
The Organizer
Site example: DMOZ
Has the best theme-based hierarchical system for organizing, taxonimizing and storing information as a different approach than flat searching…which leads me to the next…
The Searcher.
Site example: Google or Bing
Knows the search business and does it the best.
The Fixer
Site example: Lifehacker
Provides fixes and solutions for common life and tech issues and ways to do it better.
The Solution Needs Provider
Site example: Ezine Articles of Pay Per Post
Provides information for free or for a price, at varying levels of quality.
The Bug Fixer
Site example: pchell or bleepingcomputer
Sometimes people just need that little piece of know-how they don’t have to fix a problem or optimize something or niche tailor it their way.
